ITV Plan Liverpool Version of TOWIE

25 Aug

ITV1 and Lime Pictures, the production company behind ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ are reported to be planning a Liverpool version of the show.

Research into the show is currently being carried out and casting calls have been made. However, ITV isn’t the only channel planning on creating a Liverpool ‘living soap’, E4 is planning it’s own show called ‘Desperate Scousewives’ and MTV is planning a spin-off from Geordie Shore, ‘Mersey Shore’.

If all three shows go ahead, will there be enough room for them all?

‘TOWIE’ has by far had the most success out of the current UK ‘living soaps’ receiving a BAFTA earlier this year for it’s second series. Rival shows ‘Made in Chelsea’ and ‘Geordie Shore’ failed to make such an impact as the Essex based show with their debut series.

‘TOWIE’ is set to return to ITV2 this Autumn for it’s hotly anticipated third series. If the Liverpool version does go ahead on ITV1, it will be the first show of it’s kind to be shown on terrestrial TV during peak viewing times.

With the cheap production costs of ‘living soap’ shows, could soap operas and dramas soon be replaced by their real life counterparts? Only time will tell.
