Strictly Come Dancing 2011 Launch Show

12 Sep

The launch show for this year’s Strictly Come Dancing got under-way on Saturday night, with the 14 celebrities taking part in the series finding out their professional dance partner.

The show received one of it’s highest ratings ever, with audiences keen to watch the first glimpse of the hotly anticipated series, which features more contestants over the age of 50, than ever before.

So lets take a look at the celebrity and professional dance partner pairings that have got everyone talking…

Welsh TV presenter Alex Jones, has become a household name after becoming the co-host of ‘The One Show’ last year. She has been partnered up with James Jordan, the husband of fellow dance pro Ula Jordan.

Eastenders actress Anita Dobson played one of the soaps most iconic characters ‘Angie Watts’. The climax of her biggest storyline which aired on Christmas day holds the record for the highest ever audience of a soap. It was revealed on Saturday that Anita would be dancing with last year’s newcomer Robin Windsor.

Olympic gold-medal winning boxer Audley Harrison, towers above the other competitors and was rightly paired up with the tall pro Natalie Lowe.

23-year-old actress and star of ‘Waterloo Road’ Chelsee Healey is the youngest contestant this year. She is partnered up with newcomer Pasha Kovalev.

‘Daybreak’s’ Dann Lobb is not only a popular TV presenter, he used to be a professional tennis player. Dann has been teamed up with Katya Virshilas who was the partner of fellow sportsman Gavin Henson last year.

After Anne Widdecome’s success on the show last year, it is no surprise that BBC chiefs have chosen former MP Enita Currie to star on this year’s show. The politician has been paired up with Italian dancer and Argentinian tango expert Vincent Simone.

McFly drummer Harry Judd, is a sure to be favourite amongst younger viewers. He had a previous taste of Strictly whilst competing in a one-off Children In Need show with Ula Jordan. This time he is paired up with the talented Aliona Vilani.

Australian actress and singer Holly Valance, is best known by British viewers as ‘Flick’ from ‘Neighbours’ and for her hit single ‘Kiss Kiss’. Holly is arguably one of the competitions favourites to win the show, and her pairing up with last year’s winner Artem Chigvintsev is making the pair ‘the ones to watch’.

Fellow Australian actor and singer, Jason Donovan joins the line-up, dancing with Kristina Rihanoff, who so far has been on the unlucky side with her pairings. This year we look set to see more of her as Jason is sure to be a hit with the viewers.

Doing it for the older woman, singer Lulu joins the rebellious Brendan Cole to form their dance partnership.

Nancy Dell’Olio, arguably most famous for her romance with former England football manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, looks set to bring some latin charm to the show. The 50-year old who studied ballet as a teenager could be the dark horse of the competition, with her dance partner Anton Du Beke.

Footballer Robbie Savage has played as a midfielder at an array of premiership clubs in his career, now he is taking to the dance floor with dance partner Ola Jordan. Ola is one of the viewers most popular professional dancers.

Finally, Comedian and impressionist Rory Bremner has been teamed up with ballroom queen Erin Boag and Astronomer Russell Grant has been teamed up with the star of latin Flavia Cacace.

The couples now have three weeks to prepare and practice before their first live show performance on Friday 30th September and Saturday 1st October.
