The X Factor UK Charity Single Video Unveiled

26 Nov

The video for The X Factor 2011 charity single ‘Wishing On A Star’ has just been revealed.

The final 16 contestants from this years show feature on the track, which is a cover of Rose Royce’s 1978 chart hit.

Past contestants JLS and One Direction also make an appearance on the song and in the video, although it is somewhat brief. It was rumored that X Factor boss Simon Cowell asked the two boybands to appear on the track at the last minute due to fears that the charity single would not sell enough copies with just this years contestants featuring on it.

The video sees the contestants performing as well as visiting sick children at a hospital. It does seem that Kelly’s girls have a strong part to play in the video, with Misha B, Janet and Sophie Habibis featuring frequently, whilst other contestants only make small appearances. It is not until the last minute that JLS and One Direction appear which can’t help but seem slightly random.

Proceeds of ‘Wishing On A Star’ will be going to the children’s charity ‘Together For Short Lives’. The song will be available to download on November 27th and out in stores on November 28th.

I can’t believe Cowell asked JLS and One Direction to appear for fear of sales. Really? That wouldn’t show much faith in this year’s batch of hopefuls, would it? Folks buy charity singles because they’re charity singles, I think. They’re rarely anything musically spectacular and this fails to rise above the anodyne but briefly, which is less a reflection on the artists concerned (all talented) than the nature of the beast (all cynical) 😉
